This week our readings were very intriguing. The short story "Manhole 69" by JG Ballard, was actually pretty freaking cool, it reminded me of a creepy-pasta that I've read that is called the Russian Sleep Experiment. And at the same time it kind of reminded me of the movie Shutter Island, well not really but in my mind that's kind of how I pictured the setting like. At first I really didn't know what was going on until I realized that the three men that were the subjects-they had their part of the brain that controls sleep taken away-and they weren't going to be able to fall asleep what so ever as an experiment.
As I was reading I started to remember that in the beginning of the semester Dr. Strovas gave us a question whether we would take a pill or get surgery that will enable us to not sleep forever. At first I was like "yea why not, you get more stuff done," but after reading this short story I started to think that maybe no matter what you do to the body or brain, it's still going to need it's rest. If the doctors wouldn't have found those three subjects in time, who knows what else they would have hallucinated. Hell, maybe within time they wouldn't be able to tell the difference between reality and dream. I guess sleep is an inessential part of our lives that we just can't live without, even if we didn't want to sleep.

I agree that Manhole 69 was pretty freaking cool! Haha
ReplyDeleteIt was very interesting to say the least. I would say that they were caught in an eternity in their own minds, and that they weren't rescued for years.
I have seen that creepy-pasta on the Russian sleep experiment. I never want to see it again! Freaked me out.
